BUNT PAINTING

Posted by on Jun 4, 2012 | No Comments

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I’m participating in a local exhibition organised by Drawn in Bristol entitled BUNT(click for details). It opens this weekend on Saturday 9th June running until Sunday 17th June so get down there and check out the beautiful artwork on display.

Anywho I thought I’d just throw up some development photos of the painting I submitted. Like an idiot I forgot to take a photo of the finished piece but I was really happy with the end result.

I hadn’t done any traditional painting for at least a couple of years before taking on this project and saw it as a great opportunity to push myself. As I mostly paint digitally now I took what I knew from that and translated it as best as I could. The only main difference being that I’m using various paint brushes instead of a Wacom tablet to apply the paint.

Another rather daunting aspect of it is that there is no Ctrl+Z (Undo) feature when it comes to painting, which you become conscious of pretty quickly when you’re working in quick-drying acrylics. The undo feature is a huge safety net in working digitally, which is why I also saw this as an opportunity to get away from that, loosen up and prove to myself that I don’t have to depend on it.

Something I realised half way through is that it’s pretty essential to keep a colour code on a separate piece of board to refer back to when trying to remix a tone you’ve used before.  I don’t know why I didn’t do this, because I do it when I work digitally but in the end it didn’t become too much of an issue.

Overall I was surprised how quickly I got through it; all in all about two and a half days of solid work. It was probably because I set up a workspace away from distractions, had long music playlists and ample supply of herbalised tea. POW!
