InkTober – Week One

In my last post I mentioned I was taking part in InkTober. I wanted to use the whole month to challenge aspects of my drawing and creativity. For that reason I placed the following limitations for each drawing I have done and will continue to do for the rest of October:

1/ Complete each drawing within an 1 hour – This is to improve my speed at drawing, and become more decisive and fluid with my mark making on the page. I hope this will help me to be more rapid when hired for illustration commissions. Also I wanted to make the whole 31 day challenge doable… sparing an hour of my day is more than doable.

2/ Each drawing will be based around a particular figure, posture, and perspective – To improve my anatomy drawing further and also be willing to make bad drawing and learn from them.

3/ No visual source material, just rely only my knowledge of anatomy and perspective – a real challenge but also probably quite necessary to get stuff done faster. Letting go of any crutches, so to speak, no looking up images, just start sketching.

4/ Using pre-selected randomised themes each day (I wrote 31 ideas based on things I like and put them in a bowl to pick from each morning) – This is to test my creativity and think up something unique and quirky on the spot. I want to approach each drawing as if someone was telling me “I need you to draw something based around this theme.”

Here are the first 8 days. I’ve been doing each drawing as the first thing of my day. It’s been awesome! No lingering pressure throughout the day AND it really gets me warmed up creatively and sketchedly. HOOOOHH!!

Also managed to get them all pretty much done with my one hour time limit. Two I went over by one minute. I can’t lie about these things!

Hey i like you the way you have designed your name. Kindly network my name the same way. The shape you chose for the head has computerized the whole image. This is a digital being reading from a paper. Real creative. Have not been able to read cos of time. will read later

Thanks Clem, glad you like em! I wanted to keep the head simple so my focus was on the body, anatomy and poses.

Loooove these! I might try a similar challenge myself someday! I’ve been getting lazy leaning on my crutches 😀

Thanks Laura! Yeah sitting down each day to do these it has been very tempting to do easy angles and poses but I keep reminding myself that I’m trying to push my comfort zone.

It becomes even more difficult to do so when you start seeing people like them and then you feel more pressure to do better “pictures” instead of focusing on improving and exposing yourself to producing “not great looking pictures” as a result.
